Cricket

This week in cricket we practiced our techniques at bowling and learnt different techniques. You can be a 'spin bowler' or a 'pace bowler'.  Like the name suggests a spin bowler puts a certain spin on the ball which is a difficult technique to learn, whereas a pace bowler concentrates more on the speed of the ball which is just as tricky.
After a very long practice session  we managed to play a match of cricket using most of the professional rules except one or two. The final score was 25 runs to 3.

Basketball

Basketball is a very popular sport at Fairlop. We have a Basketball pitch in our play ground and many different people from all age groups play there to see how good it is.

Year 5 of Fairlop primary school have many 1st place awards over the years as we are very good at Basketball.

The redbridge mini games are coming up very soon and we are looking for to this competition. We compete in the mini games every year, year 6 had their tournament back in December and now its year 5s turn. We are all training very hard for this event and we will have trials to see who will be in the school team. Mrs Ironside will have the task of picking the bext team for the school.

More about speed stacks!

Have you used speed stacks yet?  Speed stacks are plastic cups, but this plastic is special because of the way it’s made.

The rules are tricky but you will get used to it!  The first rule is when you stack a cup you have to let go before you put it down. The second rule is to do the stacks with both hands and that’s really it. There are three different ways to do speed stacks.

The first stack is the three:

The second stack is the six stacks which is a bit trickier:

The last one is the trickiest the ten stack:

There has been and there will be more speed stack competitions in school. The first competition in the Autumn term was between the year 5 classes, and the winner was Class 5S.

Keep checking the Sports Blog for more speed stack news at Fairlop!  We love it!

Speed Stacking - Fairlop's latest craze!

Today in school, Fairlop is holding it's first ever speed-stacking competition.  All classes from Years 3-6 will participate.  Each class has put together a team of the 6 fastest children to compete against the other classes in their year group.

The competition will be watched by the whole year group, and trophies, medals and certificates will be awarded.  We hope for this event to take place every term, with KS1 students joining in the next one.

Speed stacking helps to develop co-ordination, dexterity and memory skills.  It has been proven to increase brain function and children's work has improved dramatically in schools where speed stacking takes place.  It encourages the use of both hands, thereby stimulating both sides of the brain.

Speed stacks will be available for a reduced price of £10.00 in the school office very soon.

Take a look at some of the contenders for today's event!  More impressive video displays will follow ....

Tag Rugby tournament 2008

On the 19th of November 2008, Fairlop Primary entered the Tag Rugby tournament at Ilford RFC (Rugby Football club). It was a tough, long and cold day, but our team managed to come 2nd out of 7. In our team we had 13 brave children to step up to the challenge but only half of us knew the rules! Our first challenge was against Redbridge Primary school, lucky for us we won a stunning 3 -1 with Kian Flanegan, Rosie Emerson, George Turner who opened up the scoring in the first match. In the second match we played against, Uphall Primary and won. Unfortunately our team only won second place but they are still happy with their effort. Although they lost against Mossford We all hope they do well in the future.

Year 5 and 6 Girls Football v St Anthony's

On the 11 th of March 2008 Fairlop Primary school played against St Anthonys. Just before the match started we all stretched our muscles to make sure our legs didn't hurt before the match. It was a windy day but we were still able to play! Our coach was Mrs Dawson.
As the match started we all tried our hardest to score. Within the first 10 minutes Fairlop had already scored by Chantel who had smashed the ball in the back of the net. Despite our other fantastic goals, we were just pipped at the post with a final goal from St Anthony's. The end result was 5 - 4.
